Operation Backpack

Operation Backpack is a program that feeds needy children from Schertz Elementary. These children qualify for free lunches at school, but often do not eat over the weekends.

We are partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank and taking donations to purchase backpack kits from the SA Food Bank. Just $28 will provide 8 kits and $54 will provide 16 kits, which is enough to provide a child with food for each weekend of the semester. The kits are filled with 2 breakfast, 2 lunch, and 2 dinner items plus snacks. They have a retail value of $18, but we get them from the food bank for $3.50 each.

To help out, you may donate funds in the offering plate. Be sure to write "SA Food Bank" in the memo line of your check! For more information, click the link below and look under "Our Programs" and "Programs for Children" to find the Backpack Program.

LifeStraw is a personal water filtration system that has no moving parts, filters out 99.99% of all impurities, costs less than $10 each, and will provide a full year's supply of clean water! It is used like a straw to drink through, or water can be poured through it. LifeStraw is used in water products and projects in over 64 countries around the world. Many charitable organizations are digging wells and building filtration plants all over Africa. However, people are dying while these are still under construction.

Letters from Our Troops:

“Thank you SO much for your box of goodies!” — Beryl O’Connor

“Thanks very much to you and your congregation for the care packages (2!) sent my way. It was a terrific mix of food and practical things that really come in handy. It means a lot to know that half a world away, people think enough of you to care about your well-being and to send gifts to brighten your outlook." — Eric Snyder

“That they would take time out of their busy schedule truly is humbling. To collect the snacks and accompanying care products and then package and mail to us — that is so kind!” — Dennis Kruse

"I received a VERY nice box of the best mix of items. It was a pleasant surprise and worked out very nicely. We had a waiting area full of guys who just came in from all areas of the country, getting told that because of the ash cloud in Europe (from the volcano in Iceland), they may be staying with us for a while. I passed the box around. There were a lot of tired smiles and thanks. It has to be very tiring for them. They are sick, worried, hurt and now we tell them they can't travel. Thanks again for the morale lift!" -Johnnie Gandolfo
